Indigenous People is an ethnic group of people and is inhabitant in a geographical region. They also have the earliest connection historical. There are a lot of different types of indigenous, like the Sámi people from Norway, the aborigines from Australia or the Inca from America.
There are two types of indigenous in Australia. The Aboriginal people, and the Torres Strait Islanders. Together they make up about 2,7% of the Australian population. The Aboriginal tribes speak English with some Aboriginal phrases and words being added to create Australian Aboriginal English. Before the English people came to Australia; it was over 250 languages used in the country.
Aboriginals have the oldest culture ever known on earth. Since it is so long time ago is it hard to find exactly how old they are. What they do know is that they are at least 40.000 years old, but the scientists are wondering if it can be up to 60.000 years. Their hallmark is 'oneness with nature', and everything in the nature has a story. Like the stars the mountains, the animals, trees and so on. They know almost everything about the nature around them. They know ever more than we know, simply because the information would not be found in books or on the internet. The scientists think that the first aboriginals on earth where the one who extended the big kangaroos (megafauna, as it’s called). That is maybe the stupidest thing they’ve ever done, which means that they are very clever. When they have lived on the same spot for a long time they move, that’s because they don’t want to destroy the ground too much. So they for instance can move back after a while. They live in open camps, and if they make a house at all they just make it easy with bark leaves and etc. Australia was colonized by England. At that time there was a lot of criminal people in England. So they sent the criminals to camps they made in Australia. England had diseases which the aboriginal did not recognize. Or what I mean is their immune system could not fight it. So a lot of the aboriginal died because of the English people. That was not the only reason why they died; the English men killed them to. They looked at the aboriginals as animals. The more English men there was in Australia the more threatened the aboriginals got. Later when the Englishmen looked at the aboriginals as people, they took their children. They looked at the aboriginals as people, but they did not follow the human right. They went to the aboriginals and took their children. They forced the children to go to school they were adopted to English families so they could be like “normal” people (western people).
The causes of that was a lot of aboriginals who did not know where they belonged to. A whole generation of aboriginals not knowing who‘s their parents and siblings and so on. Uluru is a secret mountain for the aboriginals and some other tribes I’m not going to mention now. As I said earlier do the aboriginals have a story behind everything in the nature. The story behind the Uluru: "Uluru (Ayers Rock) was built up during the creation period by two boys who played in the mud after rain. When they had finished their game they travelled south to Wiputa. Fighting together, the two boys made their way to the table topped Mount Conner, on top of which their bodies are preserved as boulders"(Direct copy from Wikipedia, link nr.3) There are also some well known indigenous people in Australia, for example he famous football player David Wirrpanda. He has been playing professional football in the Australian Football League in 13 years. He played from 1996 to 2009. He is a big “hero”, for many indigenous in Australia. His mother “née Briggs” is from South Australia and his father from the East Australia. The father has the same name as David Wirrpanda. He played 26 games and scored 25 goals. The teams he played for are named Eagles, East Perth and West Perth in the WAFL league. He was only 16 years when he started playing for the Eagles.
Didgeridoo is an Australian instrument who the Aboriginals have been used since forever. It’s made from limbs and tree trunks hollowed out by termites. (Termites is a type if insect) The Didgeridoo is 130 cm long. They use a stick to make a hole in it. When they play it they have to use a special breathing technique. You have to breath in with your nose and out with your mouth. It takes a lot of air to make a noise so if you want to play it you have to have strong lungs and learn the breathing technique. That’s why it’s almost only men who are playing it. The aboriginals says it’s the sound of Australia, and if the earth had made a noise it would have been that sound.
Not every tribe of Aboriginals uses the instrument. Its only 13 different tribes who use the Didgeridoo. They have different words for it. Like: Yirtakki, Garnbak and Djibolu. It all depends on where they come from.
The aboriginals have a special dance they perform for each other. The dance is different from tribe to tribe, but the basic move is the same all around. It’s a lot of stamping on the ground, and shaking the rest of the body. Today the dance is called “shake a leg”. That’s understandable sins they use their legs a lot when they stamp on the ground. The best dancers have a lot of respect from the other people in the tribe. If they can sing too then they are real good. The dance is used to imitate some animals and birds, just for fun or something the men, women and children could have in common. Sometimes they also use it as a special ritual. The “Songman” is also a man who is high regarded. The “Songman” so they call them; is a man who sings songs, sometimes he just finds up stuff to sing about while he is singing. The most awesome is their voice, which means that there are not many “Songmen”. The “Songman” have the same role in the “aboriginal world” like the artists have their role in the modern society. Sometimes the “Songman” goes to other tribes and perform for them. They don’t get money for doing it they just get honor and glory.
My own opinion about the aborigines is: I think they are clever people. It is amazing that they still chose to live in that way, when they could have lived as we do. I could never live in a society like that if I knew that the rest of the world had high technology. I guess many of they chose to live like that because they don’t want their mankind to disappear. They are proud of their forefathers who chose to bring the generations further on, and they want to do the same thing. Like the way we do.
